www.youtube.com/ UnderageFestivalsExcitement builds as new acts
are announced for the second coming of Underage Festival. The world’s
first incarnation of the Underage festival in 2007 was an unprecedented
summer sensation and this year’s line up is bigger and bolder.
Boasting an already impressive bill, the addition of The Maccabees
promises to bring that bouncing, brash and befuddled blend of quirky,
upbeat, pop / punk art rocker sound that the band have become so
famous for.
Miles Cain takes a break from his new project with Alex ‘Arctic
Monkeys’ Turner, The Last Shadow Puppets to head up his own
band The Rascals, Liverpool’s favourite four piece who have
been making waves with their beautiful pop melodies interspersed
with a psychedelic quirk and underlying dark soul. Having
learnt their craft from touring with bands like The Coral, The Zutons
and the Arctic Monkeys, these fellas have certainly been keeping
the right company.
Four Tet ( Aka Kieran Hebden) adds a new dimension of sound to the
festival with his overtly unique music that has been described as
‘Folk Music made by machines’. A true child of
the computer generation and bona fide electronic superstar, his
disparate, disjointed and almost indescribable sound is a truly
wonderful addition to underage 2008.
The final new addition to this years Underage festival, and potentially
the most apt band to play the festival yet, Care Bears on Fire grace
the stage with their underage kid punk rock. The New York
trio (better known as Sophie, Izzy and Lucio) age between 12 and
14 and have been playing music together since the 4th grade when
a practice session turned food fight saw a gummy bear melting onto
a live wire of a fender amp, ‘we were visited by the spectre
of a giant care bear who told us to go forth and rock’.
The band who have single handedly been holding down the fort on
kid rock stateside are set to show the underage kids that kids really
can rock.
And finally on the live front, The Underage Festival’s myspace
favourite band Pull In Emergency play and upbeat set of thrilling
melodious guitar pop.
It’s not just the live act schedule that is being bolstered
either, as the Young Turks Soundsystem brings a cohort of new DJs
to the underage table. The cutting edge captains bring an
eclectic mish mash of the cream up jump up DJ sets in the form of
Faris Trotter, Lightspeed Champion, Mystery Jets, Good Shoes, Frederick
Blood-Royale, Kid Harpoon and The Young Turks Themselves.
Playing across the other stages are leading lights of the UK’s
alternative music scene including headliners Gallows / Foals
/ The Horrors and supporting cast, Bonde De Role / Bombay Bicycle
Club / Cheeky Cheeky and the Nosebleeds / Count And Sinden / Florence
And The Machine / Fryars / Ipso Factor / Operator Please / Poppy
And The Jezebels / Scum / Sons And Daughters / Team Waterpolo /
The Rifles / Those Dancing Days / Wild Beasts / XX Teens
Last year’s festival received a wealth of A+ reviews and Gold
Star plaudits from the media. From Sunday Times Style and The Observer
to Teen Vogue and Time Magazine to Artrocker and NME to the BBC
6 o’clock news, London Tonight and Radio 1, this was an event
that captured the imagination of a nation and tapped into a vibrant
and buoyant scene set by Britain’s youth.
Underage co founder Sam Kilcoyne, now a veteran at 16 and recent
winner of the Media Guardian’s ‘Rising Star Of The Year’
award for the 2007 Underage Festival has returned with his unbridled
passion to curate the summer’s hottest ticket event. With
not one complaint and an impeccably behaved crowd in 07 the organizers
will this year be increasing the capacity from 5,000 to 7,000 to
meet the insatiable demand of the underage music scene and putting
together a line up strong enough to wish you were 16 all over again.
What the Papers say:
The Times 'At the Underage Festival in East London most of the artists
were veterans of the Club scene, making it a true culmination of
the Underage Club’s achievements”
The Observer ‘Not many debut music-festivals have garnered
as much attention as this one, boasting an assortment of unsigned,
new and reputable talent’
Time Magazine ‘Underage was a day of good, clean, sweaty,
noisy rock that provided the real highs.’
I-D Magazine ‘Five thousand kiddiewinks going bonkers for
bands and throwing their shoes at their onstage heroes - the crowds
went home happy, the festival a triumph.’
